Amidst green surrounding you on all sides, the nature of golf simulates life in several ways. It lets you set your own pace, and no matter how much you practice, golf will always come up with surprises that can change your game.
It is the true test of your patience, judgment and flexibility. There are certain things that are just beyond your control and the best way to measure a golfer is how well he can adapt to those situations. You can never learn all the tactics of this game. There always so much to learn, adhere, understand and implement. One truly never stops learning.
No one ever has perfected this game, it involves a continuous process of learning. Golf is about being honest to yourself. No umpires, referees or judges to see if you have transgressed. You take full ownership of your transgressions. We as players keep our scores and mind the rules. Honesty becomes an important part of the game. Hence, it has instilled in me the value of integrity and fairness.
I learnt that to excel in the game of golf, one needs to put in a lot of hard work in other sports as well. It needs a lot of concentration and to attain that level of focus, meditation is a must. One needs to have that level of mental ease and peace. Often at work, when things are a bit chaotic I unwind myself thinking about that one thing alone.
Golf is like a stress buster for me, I often compare life with golf. Just the way the scope to improve upon your own act in life are limitless, golf also gives you second chances. Life if played like Golf, with a lot of judgement, precision and technique can become very interesting and fun.
Both, in golf and in life, we all take risks . If it works, then you can reap the benefits. If it doesn’t, then take the experience and learn something from it. I have always believed risks make life exciting and eventful. One does not become successful without accepting change and risking a few ideas.
We have to learn new things and and glory can’t be achieved by just doing the conventional. Take risks, think ahead of time and play the game. But, to do this, to play your own game, you need to trust yourself. To earn respect from others one needs to respect ones own self.
It does not matter how many supporters you have, if you do not believe in yourself you will not go anywhere. Trusting in my abilities and actions motivates me to perform better. It also helps me to become more accountable to myself.
Being a CEO at Diamond Bank, I am responsible for my own actions, I have to be my own boss and this ‘trust’ helps me to bet upon myself. This is what Golf does to me, I was not even consciously aware that I am learning life lessons while doing what I love.
